Elevate Your Practice: 5 Things to Do Before & After Your Pilates Class

Whether you’re stepping onto the reformer for the very first time or you’re a seasoned pro at the hundred, what you do off the mat matters just as much as the work you do on it.

At Desert Bloom Pilates & Boutique, we believe a great workout is an all-day experience. To help you get the absolute most out of your sessions, we’ve rounded up the ultimate pre- and post-class rituals to keep you blooming, balanced, and glowing.

5 Things to Do Before Your Pilates Class

Setting yourself up for success starts before you even walk through our boutique doors. Here is how to prepare your mind and body:

1. Hydrate (But Don't Flood the System)

Hydration is key for muscle function and flexibility, but chugging a liter of water ten minutes before class is a recipe for a sloshy, uncomfortable core workout. Instead, sip water consistently throughout the hours leading up to your class.

2. Fuel Wisely

Pilates requires a ton of core engagement, so a heavy meal beforehand is a no-go. Opt for a light, easily digestible snack 60 to 90 minutes before class. Think:

  • A banana with a little almond butter

  • A handful of berries and walnuts

  • A small green smoothie

3. Arrive Early to Unwind and Decompress

Rushing into the studio with your adrenaline pumping makes it incredibly hard to connect with your breath. Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Use this time to browse our latest boutique arrivals, chat with the community, slip on your grip socks, and mentally transition away from the chaos of your day.

4. Wear the Right Gear

Comfort and functionality are everything. Wear form-fitting activewear that allows your instructor to see your alignment and check your form.

5. Set an Intention and Connect with Your Breath

Before your instructor calls the first exercise, take a moment to center yourself. Inhale deeply through your nose and expand your ribs, then exhale fully through your mouth. Decide what you want out of the next 50 minutes, whether it’s finding mental clarity, pushing your boundaries, or just practicing gratitude for what your body can do.

5 Things to Do After Your Pilates Class

You’ve shaken, you’ve stretched, and you’ve conquered the session! Here is how to maximize your recovery and carry that post-Pilates high with you:

1. Take a Few Minutes to Gently Stretch

While Pilates includes plenty of lengthening, your muscles just worked incredibly hard. Don't rush straight to your car. Take two minutes to do a gentle forward fold, a chest opener, or a seated figure-four stretch to tell your nervous system it's time to relax.

2. Refuel with Protein and Complex Carbs

Your muscles need the right building blocks to repair and grow stronger. Within an hour of finishing class, treat your body to a high-quality meal or snack. A protein shake, eggs with avocado toast, or a quinoa bowl with grilled veggies and chicken are all perfect ways to replenish your energy.

3. Wash Your Face and Refresh

Sweat, oil, and studio equipment can be a harsh combo for your skin. Head to the vanity, wash your hands, and give your face a quick cleanse or a spray of a refreshing mist.

4. Reward Yourself with a Little Boutique Therapy

You showed up and put in the work, you deserve a little treat! Take a stroll through our curated boutique. Whether it's a buttery-soft new matching set, a beautifully scented wellness candle, or a brand-new pair of grip socks for your next class, celebrating your hard work is part of the fun.

5. Hydrate and Track How You Feel

Keep that water bottle handy! Replenishing lost fluids is crucial for preventing next-day muscle soreness. As you drink up, check in with your body. Notice how much taller you feel, how your posture has improved, and how much mental clarity you’ve gained.
